National Audit of Clinical Practice for Adults with Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria Pulmonary Disease (NTM-PD)

NTM-PD is increasingly common, and the available resources to manage this condition are limited. A multidisciplinary management plan, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies, is recommended to optimise the healthcare of people with NTM-PD.

The 2024 NTM Network UK Standards of Care outline good practice in NTM management. We wish to understand how care was provided for adults in the UK with NTM-PD prior to their introduction, in particular non-pharmacological management.

Aim

Audit the practice of NHS services that treat NTM-PD.

Study subjects

The first 3 consecutive adults in your service diagnosed with NTM-PD from 1 January 2022 onwards identified from your local records.

Eligibility criteria

  • Age 18 years or older.

  • Confirmed NTM-PD.

  • Diagnosis of NTM-PD in your service on or after 1 January 2022.

Data collection

  • Healthcare practitioners complete a concise set of questions tailored to collect anonymised, retrospective data on adults diagnosed with NTM-PD using patients’ records, with no direct patient recruitment or contact required.

  • Data entered directly into REDCap online survey interface and stored in a secure database at University College London with encrypted digital password protection.

  • The questionnaire will take approximately 15-20 minutes per patient.

Sample size
We plan to include around 40-50 UK sites.

Closing date

This study will close in February 2025.

Ethics, Governance and Patient consent

  • Individual patient consent is not required.

  • Ethical approval is not required.

  • However different NHS services have different levels of information governance requirements and centres will need to ensure they have Caldicott Guardian or similar local information governance approval to submit data to this audit.

  • We can support you with this.

  • When you are ready, please send us an email using the address below, and we will be happy to share the study guidance along with the audit link.
